“Woven Griefâ€
Directors: Kenneth Nguyen and Jaden Annan
Logline: Kieran, a young man grappling with the recent death of a family member, finds himself struggling to navigate his grief after the funeral. While coming to terms with his own feelings, he must also bear his father’s anger and his sister’s innocence, hoping to somehow find a way to cope with the overwhelming loss.
Ruby (20s)(Any Ethnicity): A young woman who is a close friend of Kieran. She is hesitant and unsure of how to comfort Kieran, but her genuine concern and shared experience of loss provide a moment of connection. Ruby is compassionate and supportive, offering a quiet strength to Kieran.
Mother (40s-50s)(African American): Kieran’s mother is overwhelmed with grief. Her mascara is messy from crying, and she struggles to keep the family together. She is caring and nurturing, but her own sorrow makes it difficult for her to manage the household dynamics.
Father (40s-50s)(African American): Kieran’s father is a volatile and angry man, especially when drunk. His eyes are bloodshot, and he often lashes out at Kieran, blaming him for not helping more. He is a complex character, struggling with his own grief and expressing it through anger and frustration.
Soraya (6-10)(African American ): Kieran’s little sister, Soraya, is an innocent and naïve young girl. She clutches her teddy bear and looks up to Kieran for comfort. Soraya does not fully understand the permanence of death and believes her brother will return, adding to the emotional weight of the scene.
